Recap
We had a great turnout for the 1st ever Reston Junior Open Championship! We had a total of 44 players in 3 different age divisions. Both Black tee and Red tee divisions shotgunned at 1 pm, playing 18 holes. While the Purple tee division shotgunned at 2:30 pm, playing 9 holes. There was a play off for the Black tee division, where the rest of us gathered around to watch. We ended the night with a cookout and raffle prizes!
Leading up to the Reston Junior Open Championship, we hosted a Cup Series event. Players would earn points for each event they played in. The top 2 points leaders in each division at the Cup Series automatically earned a spot in the Reston Junior Open Championship!
Junior Championship Trophy
This sterling silver trophy was originally presented to the Congressional Country Club Junior Champion, Jimmy Drain, in 1929. We found it online and thought it would be a great way to connect a little local golf history to our Junior Club Championship. Every year, 1st place from each division will get their name on the trophy.
Purple Division
We had 16 players participate in the purple division this year, ages 7-10. Mark Mercer took 1st place, with an outstanding 33 (-3). Owen Pinkman took 2nd place, shooting a 39. Right behind him was Weston Kim, with a 40. Low female was Brooke Lagera, shooting a 42.
Red Division
We had 15 players participate in the Red Division, ages 11-13. Jake Lopes snagged 1st place, shooting an 81. Following right behind him was Meg Lagera (83) and Cole Peterson (86).
Black Division
We had 13 players participate in the Black Division this year. Alexander McClain took 1st place, with a solid 73. There was a tie for 2nd place, both shooting a 79. Max Vadas and Maaz Nadeem both went back to the 18th tee box to settle the tie breaker, while all the other players and parents watched from the 18th green. Both Vadas and Nadeem hit their first shot in the middle of the fairway. Nadeem’s approach shot landed 40 feet from the hole. Vadas approach shot landed right of the green, having a blind shot to the hole. Vadas making an up and down to win the playoff by one stroke and taking 2nd place. Low female was Ann Ehrlich shooting a 98.
